10th Canadian Summer School on Quantum Information

This summer school on quantum information marks the 10th anniversary of the highly renowned series. Previous events (2001-2009) were held in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Waterloo. It follows the tradition of educating young researchers (prospective and current graduate students, as well as post-docs) on the rapidly-evolving field of quantum information science and brings together the world's experts from different areas.

7th Annual Canadian Annual Canadian Quantum Information Students' Conference 2010 (CQISC'10)

The Canadian Quantum Information Students' Conference (CQISC) is the annual conference run by and for graduate students from Canada and around the world. Students from a variety of backgrounds including physics, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, and engineering are encouraged to attend. The conference is held over five days and all delegates are encouraged to present a 20 minutes talk or contribute a poster on their area of expertise. CQISC increases and strengthens networking between quantum information research centres by bringing together students from a wide range of disciplines and universities.

A two-week program on the theory and experimental study of quantum information processors aimed primarily at students just completin their junior year. The program is designed to introduce students to the field of quantum information procesing. The lectures are geared to students of engineering, physics, chemistry and math, though all interested students are invited to apply.

Workshop on Quantum Information Processing with Spins & Superconductor

Recent progress in quantum information processing with solid-state systems has seen the demonstration of high-fidelity operations, long coherence times, measurement of entanglement, and the first solid-state algorithm.  To continue this rate of progress will require a significant degree of cross-fertilization between communities working on superconducting systems and electron spins.  It is the goal of this workshop to bring leaders in the two fields together to discuss recent progress, unanswered questions, and future directions for building a solid-state quantum-information processor.

4th Workshop on Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication & Cryptopgraphy

Quantum computation, quantum communication, and quantum cryptography are subfields of quantum information processing, and interdisciplinary field of information science and quantum mechanics. TQC 2009 focuses on theoretical aspects of these subfields. The objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers so that they can interact with each other and share problems and recent discoveries. The workship was held May 11-13, 2009 at the University of Waterloo and consisted of invited talks, contributed talks, and a poster session.

Ninth International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC '08)

 

 

On August 19-24, 2008, the University of Calgary hosted the ninth international conference of Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC). This bi-annual meeting has been the leading conference in the field for more than two decades and has a long standing tradition of bringing together top researchers and students from the mathematics, computer science, engineering, experimental and theoretical physics communities.

The conference featured a strong set of 46 invited speakers, including patriarchs of the field, such as Peter Knight and Anton Zeilinger. Additionally, we had 16 contributed talks and 248 posters. Altogether, the meeting was attended by 312 delegates, of which 112 were students. The proceedings of QCMC 2008 will be published by the American Institute of Physics.

An integral part of QCMC is the International Quantum Communication Award for outstanding achievements in quantum communication research. This award is sponsored by the Tamagawa University and is presented at each QCMC meeting since 1996. This year, the winners were Jeffrey Shapiro 9MIT), Akira Furusawa (University of Tokyo), and Anton Zeilinger (University of Vienna).

In addition to the scientific program, we had many fun special events, such as an outing to Heritage Park Historical Village, a banquet (which featureed a performance by the native Canadian Kehewin Dance Theatre), and a reception "Quantum Informaion in Canada". A definite highlight was the soccer tournament among four teams composed of conference delegates from different parts of the world. The winner, Europe (not surprisingly), was awarded medals and a challenge trophy.

The next QCMC conference will be held in 2010 in Brisbance, Australia and will be organized by Timothy Ralph from the University of Queensland and Ping Koy Lam from the Australian National University.

Information Security in a Quantum World

 

This summer school is focused on quantum cryptography and is planned for August 7-11, 2008 at the IQC in Waterloo. The summer school is aimed at graduate students and industry researchers who know the basic ideas of quantum information and cryptography and who want to deepen their understanding of the cryptographic context, the theoretical underpinning and the experimental realisations and difficulties.

Fifth Canadian Quantum Information

Students' Conference (CQISC)

The conference is free of charge and students from across Canada, as well as from all over the world, are invited to attend. The conference consists of presentations given by students having a background in areas such as computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering and chemistry. The diversity of the audience reflects the highly multidisciplinary aspect of the field.

Eighth Canadian Summer School on Quantum Information

Over five days, students were introduced to the exciting field of quantum information science by participating in seminars led by experts in the field.
