Steacie Memorial FellowshipsJune 17, 2010Quantumworks Associate Member Alexandre Blais from the Université de Sherbrooke received this award for his research that tackles key problems in the development of quantum computing technology that will provide unprecedented speeds of information processing. Every year, NSERC awards up to six Steacie Fellowships that are held for a two-year period. Successful fellows are relieved of teaching and administrative duties, so that they can devote all their time and energy to research. The Fellowships are held at a Canadian university or affiliated research institution. In recognition of the award’s prestige and the increased time available for research, fellows will also each receive a research grant of $250,000 and will be invited to submit an application to the Research Tools and Instruments Grants program for equipment funding related to their Steacie research.
Blais’s work will contribute to developing what is considered the future of computers, one that transcends traditional computer technology. His field has garnered the keen interest of governments and technology enthusiasts worldwide and has implications that will improve not only computer hardware, but software aspects such as cryptography that will increase the security of information transactions on the Internet.
